Fragments of Silence

Fragments of Silence represents a critical evolution in Elena Vasari’s exploration of spatial dynamics and architectural boundary. Working with a rigorously constrained palette of raw linen, dehydrated gesso, and gold leaf, Vasari invites the viewer to treat the painted surface not as a flat window of representation, but as a site of physical and acoustic resonance. At the center of this series is a controlled process of material dehydration. Heavily formulated gesso is layered onto unprimed organic linen and subjected to localized heating, inducing organic shrinking and micro-fissures over a period of weeks. The resulting cracks are not accidental, but deliberate pathways mapping the natural thresholds where solid matter succumbs to structural pressure. Within these dark, jagged fissures, Vasari meticulously lays thin sheets of 24k gold leaf. The bright, reflective metallic surfaces interlock directly with the rough, organic edges of the broken plaster. This produces a dynamic surface dialogue where natural ambient light animates the canvas — transitioning from soft, shadowed crevices under low light to glowing networks of pure luminescence as light moves across the gallery space.
